Introduction

You have been chosen to be the principal for a day. As principal, one of the first things you hope to change is the school lunch. The only rule you have been asked to follow is the Food Guide Pyramid. You must research the food guide pyramid, complete a few activities, and present your final school lunch menu for the day to your teacher and classmates. You will also present a rationale for why you chose the foods on your menu. Your classmates are counting on you to have a delicious and nutritious lunch!

Your final task is to present a school lunch menu for one day to your teacher and classmates. It should be made using construction paper or poster board, markers, and any other crafty supplies you would like. The menu should accurately reflect the Food Guide Pyramid daily amounts and should also be appealing to elementary school students. It should be attractive and neat using correct spelling and grammar. You will have a week of computer lab time to work your way through this webquest.
Process

You will work in heterogenous teams of three to complete this assignment.
You will need to first become familiar with the food guide pyramid. Print out the worksheet (click here) and write each group members name on it. Click on the following resource. As you look through this website, look for the names of all six food groups, how many servings are recommended for each, and several examples of food that fit into each food group. (Hint: click on the individual foods groups at the right of the website page for the information.) Record your findings on the worksheet. Save this worksheet for future reference.

Now that you know the food groups and how many servings are recommended of each, you will need some practice in classifying foods into the food groups. Go to the following website, click on the game called "Food Groups", and then click on "Let's Play". You will need to click on each food and drag it to the correct food group. Make sure each group member has a chance to play the game before moving on. If a member is having trouble with it, work together to figure out the correct answer.

Don't forget about the fruits and vegetables! Many children don't like to eat vegetables, but they are an extremely important part of your diet. It will be very important to include fruits and vegetables in your school lunch. Go to the following website and see if you can find how many servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended a day. While you're at this website, look for some examples of what a serving size of fruits and vegetables consists of. What are some "delicious" fruit and vegetable examples? (Hint: click on "Facts"; then click on "Serving Sizes" and "Select-o-Meter")

You're almost ready to plan your menu! Before you do, watch a short movie to review the importance of nutrition. Click on the link below. The nutrition movie will load automatically. You will need to click on "Play Movie". Be patient, it might take a few seconds to begin.

Finally, you have made it! You are ready to work together to plan out a lunch menu for one day at your school. Keep in mind everything you have learned about nutrition and the recommended amounts on the Food Guide Pyramid. Of course, this is just one meal out of the day, so you don't have to include ALL of the amounts, but you should include some. You should also include a variety of the food groups.
As a group, brainstorm your menu options on a piece of paper
Choose the menu items you would like and write them on a piece of paper
Revise and edit to be sure you've included all the necessary groups and have correctly spelled the words. Use the online dictionary for help in spelling words. If you aren't sure how to use the online dictionary, ask a teacher or other adult for help.
Publish your final menu on a piece of construction paper or poster board. Make the menu as creative as you want. Once you have made the menu, you will need to write at least three sentences explaining why you made the choices you did. When all groups have finished this assignment, you will present your menu to your teacher and classmates.
If any groups finish early, you may plan out a breakfast menu for that same day. Again, pay attention to the daily recommended amounts on the Food Guide Pyramid. If you still have remaining time, look through the listed internet sources to find more information about nutrition and healthy foods. Challenge: Can you find where peaches are grown? Can you find fun ways to eat raisins? How about facts about papayas?
